Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic Medicine is a blend of modern medical science and time honored healing traditions with the aim of preventing disease, restoring health, and finding and curing the cause of illness, both in acute and chronic conditions. The presence of symptoms is a way for the body to communicate that there is a disruption in its’ proper functioning. Treatment targets this underlying process in order to bring long-term health back to the body. Conditions commonly treated are gastrointestinal disturbances, endocrinological disorders, allergies, autoimmune conditions, disorders of the female and male reproductive systems, infertility, menopause, and many more. Naturopathic doctors are trained to be primary care doctors, and practice as such in licensed states. Schooling involves a rigorous four to five year accredited medical program, which includes 1500 clinical hours. Modalities learned are botanical medicine, homeopathy, nutrition, physical medicine, minor surgery, and pharmacology.

Biotherapeutic Drainage

Biotherapeutic drainage is a deep acting therapy that was developed by doctors in Europe over 100 years ago. This approach focuses on efficient elimination of toxins through organ systems, optimizing the physiological cellular function of organs, and decreasing insults to the body from lifestyle, diet, and stressors (physical, mental, emotional, chemical) in order to bring balance/homeostasis back to the body.  When the body is not in balance we see the development of signs and symptoms, eventually leading to chronic illness. Biotherapeutic drainage uses homeopathy and plant preparations, as well as hydrotherapy, diet, physical therapies, etc – even drinking water is a way to facilitate biotherapeutic drainage. All of the therapeutics act to facilitate the body’s natural ability to eliminate toxins without forcing the body to do so. The end result for the patient is to restore health, meaning that cells, tissues, and organs can function properly without being overburdened by waste build-up, and in doing so prevents the body’s reliance on adaptive physiology in order to continue with life. This therapy has a gentle, yet powerful and long-term effect on the body.

The food we eat is too often making us sick. Healthy food choices are essential in healing and nourishing our bodies, because food is the truest form of medicine there is! Each person is unique meaning their nutritional needs are unique as well. Individualized guidance is based on a patient’s condition, constitution, and specific food sensitivities or allergies.

Homeopathy is an energetic medicine using natural substances in a highly dilute concentration. It stimulates the body’s natural healing tendency to become more dynamic, effective, and efficient. The focus is on strengthening the body’s ability to heal rather than treating disease, and is appropriate in physical, mental, or emotional imbalances. Homeopathy is safe, effective, affordable, and will not cause side effects or negative interactions with other therapies. The art of prescribing a homeopathic remedy is essential to its efficacy.

Craniosacral Therapy

A gentle energetic therapy that returns harmonious movement within the various body parts; physical, emotional, mental, and etheric. The practitioner uses light touch to palpate the flow of cerebrospinal fluid as it moves throughout the cranium and spine. Ideally the CSF moves in concert with all other bodily tissues, and when it does not it can create imbalance and disease. Benefits of this work include increased blood and oxygen to organs and tissues, pain reduction, structural realignment, and deep relaxation. It is commonly used during pregnancy and labor, with infants after a difficult birth, in musculoskeletal pain, physical and emotional traumas, headaches, and neurologic or stress induced complaints, as well as many other conditions. There are no contraindications to this work and does not interfere with any other therapies.

Physical Medicine

Includes hydrotherapy (the use of contrasting hot and cold water to stimulate immune, digestive, and detoxification functions), and manual therapy to correct structural imbalances. Naturopathic doctors are trained in NMT (Naturopathic Manipulative Therapeutics). The techniques are drawn from naturopathic, osteopathic, chiropractic, and physical therapy sources and are based on the most advanced models and understanding of soft-tissue and joint dysfunctions. Treatment is very specific and only targets areas that are out of balance or restricted.

We do provide General Physical Exams. If you require consultation from a distance, you will need to be under the direction of your primary care doctor in your town, as we will not be able to provide physical exams outside of our Durango office location.

Lyme Disease

The major problem in testing for Lyme is that we are testing the immune system for a response against the bug, but the bug has an amazing ability to depress our immune function, and they even wear our immune cells like a coat so our bodies can’t identify that an infection exists. This makes for serious inaccuracy in testing. The general consensus in the Lyme world is that if it looks like Lyme, it’s Lyme, so treat. One study showed that 56% of those who have Lyme tested negative in our two-tier testing system that the CDC recommends using.

I know what it looks like to ‘live’ with Lyme and not have it completely ravage your body. Most people have spent $100,000 on treatment and have seen up to 10 doctors before they get a Lyme diagnosis. I want to prevent that. It drove me to find a good treatment option for myself, and therefore pushed me to create an alternative, and effective, treatment for others. For that I am grateful. I am grateful to help others heal from a disease that they are often told is all in their head. Rest assured, it is not in your head.
